Goals galore as new EPL season begins

By Tosin Omojola –
Goals flowed freely as matchday one of the 2025/26 English Premier League season continued on Saturday.
The action had kicked off on Friday, with defending champions Liverpool defeating Bournemouth 4-2, but even more goals followed the next day.
Saturday’s fixtures began with Aston Villa and Newcastle United playing out a goalless draw — the only match of the day without a goal.
At the Amex Stadium, Brighton and Hove Albion were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham. Matt O’Riley’s 55th-minute penalty gave the hosts the lead, but Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a point.
Sunderland made a statement at the Stadium of Light with a 3-0 thrashing of West Ham United, thanks to goals from Eliazer Mayenda (61’), Daniel Ballard (73’), and Wilson Isido (90+2’).
Tottenham Hotspur also impressed, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Burnley at White Hart Lane. Richarlison struck twice (10’, 60’) before Brennan Johnson added a third in the 66th minute.
Manchester City began their title chase in style with a commanding 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Erling Haaland scored twice, while Tijani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki completed the rout.
On Sunday, Chelsea will open their campaign at home to Crystal Palace, while Nottingham Forest will host Brentford. The first round of fixtures will conclude in the evening with the heavyweight clash at Old Trafford, where Manchester United host Arsenal.
