Golden Eaglets crash out as Ghana ends Nigeria’s AFCON, World Cup hopes

By Tosin Omojola –
For the second consecutive time, Nigeria will not be part of the African U-17 Nations Cup, and by extension, the FIFA U-17 World Cup, after the Golden Eaglets lost 0-2 to Ghana’s Black Starlets on Monday night.
The WAFU-B U-17 semi-final tie between the West African neighbours was played at the Stade Charles Konan Banny, Yamoussoukro.
The contest was settled as early as the first half, as the Black Starlets netted twice to secure victory in the opening 45 minutes.
The Eaglets, who had a decent run in the group stage—collecting four points to qualify for the semi-final—had no answer to the firepower of the Ghanaians, who, in contrast, had struggled to reach this stage.
Michael Awuli and Yao Gavi were the heroes as the Ghanaians booked their place in the final of the WAFU-B tournament, ending the dream of the Manu Garba-led Eaglets.
