Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the implementation of the new minimum wage of N70,000, as announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, on Saturday. According to the statement, the approved wage will be implemented across the Kwara State public service, effective from October 2024.
The decision, which includes consequential adjustments to the relevant salary structures, was reached after a successful tripartite meeting involving government representatives, the leadership of the Organised Labour in Kwara State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), and representatives from the organized private sector.
Dr. Nuru, co-chairperson of the minimum wage committee, expressed her appreciation to Governor AbdulRazaq for granting the committee full autonomy to reach a consensus that benefits all parties.
“The immediate implementation of this new wage underscores Governor AbdulRazaq’s proactive and worker-friendly approach,” she said.
The Governor, she added, remains committed to the welfare of public servants and all citizens of Kwara State as part of his broader vision for sustainable development and economic stability.
The new wage structure will also apply to workers in the 16 local government areas of the state.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration continues to prioritize the well-being of its workforce and the general populace, demonstrating its dedication to fostering growth and prosperity for all in Kwara State, according to the Commissioner.
Dr. Nuru also lauded the Governor’s leadership and foresight, noting that this new wage policy is a timely and much-needed measure to cushion the effects of current economic challenges sustainably.
She commended the collaborative spirit between the government and labour unions, which made this achievement possible.
“The new minimum wage is a testament to the state’s commitment to ensuring that workers’ welfare remains at the forefront of its policies,” she added.
