LASG, NCAA discuss plans for Ibeju-Lekki Airport construction
The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, held a crucial meeting with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to discuss the commencement of construction for the proposed Lagos State Airport in Ibeju-Lekki.
The meeting, which took place on Saturday, highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing the project, which has been part of the state’s master plan since 2007.
In his opening remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to the management teams of the NCAA and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for their participation.
He emphasized the importance of engaging with regulatory bodies to ensure the project’s smooth implementation and to clarify the necessary steps for approval.
Governor Sanwo-Olu provided a historical overview of the project, explaining that the concept of an additional airport for Lagos was first considered in 2008, following the completion of a feasibility study between 2008 and 2010, which confirmed the project’s viability.
However, setbacks delayed the start of the airport construction. Now, with significant industrial development in the eastern part of Lagos, including Ibeju-Lekki and Epe, the Governor said the need for a second airport has become more urgent.
He noted that discussions with the former Minister of Aviation had resulted in the approval of an aerodrome for Ibeju-Lekki. Governor Sanwo-Olu further revealed that Lagos State had engaged a consultant to oversee the project but stressed the importance of receiving official approval from the NCAA before proceeding with construction.
The proposed airport, he added, is a key element of Lagos State’s larger transport master plan, aimed at improving connectivity and easing travel congestion.
Responding to the Governor’s address, NCAA’s Acting Director-General, Captain Chris Najomo, confirmed that the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development had granted preliminary approval for the airport project.
However, he noted that the Lagos State Government still needed to submit an official declaration of intent to the NCAA, as required by Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs). This submission must be made at least 180 days before the start of construction to allow for proper regulatory guidance and oversight.
Captain Najomo reassured the Lagos State Government of the NCAA’s full support for the project, in line with Nigeria’s ease of doing business policy. He urged the state to promptly submit the necessary documents to facilitate the approval process and ensure compliance with aviation standards.
Concluding the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that 4,000 hectares of land had been designated for the new airport in Ibeju-Lekki.
He expressed optimism about the collaboration between Lagos State and the NCAA, stressing that working closely with federal agencies would lead to the successful realization of the project.
The Ibeju-Lekki Airport is expected to boost economic growth, improve transportation, and further position Lagos as a key aviation hub in West Africa.
