Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Tuesday inaugurated the Justice Sector Reform Teams’ Conference in Ilorin, the state capital, praising President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to bolstering public trust in Nigeria’s justice system.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Network of Justice Sector Reform Teams (JSRT) Conference, Governor AbdulRazaq emphasized the importance of the event, expressing optimism that the dedication of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi SAN, and his team would ensure its success.
“I have confidence that the JSRT will address all pending issues on judicial reforms with knowledge and patriotism, strengthening public confidence in the judicial system,” the Governor stated.
The three-day conference, organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice, brought together key stakeholders in the justice sector. Attendees included AGF Fagbemi SAN, Kwara State Chief Judge Justice Abiodun Adebara, judges from other states, Grand Kadi of Kwara State Justice Abdullateef Kamaldeen, Kwara State Attorney General Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, cabinet members, and Prof. Muhammad Tabiu SAN, among others.
AGF Fagbemi described the conference as an opportunity to evaluate progress, address challenges, and explore innovative strategies to enhance the justice sector’s efficiency and accountability.
“As we gather here today, we do so against the backdrop of persistent challenges that hinder the effectiveness and accessibility of our justice system,” Fagbemi remarked.
“The conference provides a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues, develop harmonized responses for improving the justice system, increase accountability, and strengthen coordination among stakeholders. It is also a follow-up to the National Summit on Justice held on April 24-25, 2024.”
Fagbemi also expressed pride in being a native of Kwara State and commended the state’s strides in justice reform.
“I am proud to tell all participants that I am from this state, and my Governor is a man of the people. Your dedication to ensuring the success of this conference reflects your commitment to progress and excellence.
“Notably, as Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Your Excellency is leading the charge among governors taking strategic steps to reform this critical sector,” Fagbemi added.
In his welcome address, Prof. Tabiu highlighted Nigeria’s collective progress in advancing justice sector reforms under the current administration, lauding AGF Fagbemi’s leadership.
“Holding this conference in Ilorin is very symbolic. The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation is leading the justice reforms team from across the country right here in his hometown,” Tabiu said.
“This is an opportunity for us to benefit from the leadership values of Kwara people. From ancient to modern history, the people of Kwara have demonstrated exceptional leadership across all spheres of governance — the executive, legislature, judiciary, and the legal profession. They consistently raise sons and daughters to be effective leaders.”
The conference continues over the next three days, culminating on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
