Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has commended security agencies following the reported killing of a suspected senior Islamic State West Africa Province commander, Abdussamad Ohida, also known as Anwar, in a forest in Owo.

Ohida was reportedly killed during a coordinated operation involving the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services and Ondo State Amotekun Corps, with the Army confirming the operation.

Security sources said Ohida had served as deputy to the ISWAP Central Nigeria leader, Abu Ikrimah, also known as Abu Uwais, before assuming a leadership role following Ikrimah’s arrest in 2023.

The sources also alleged that Ohida was linked to plans to carry out attacks in parts of southern Nigeria, including possible attacks on civilians during the coming festive period.

Reacting to the development, Aiyedatiwa said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of timely intelligence and collaboration among security agencies in addressing emerging security threats.

The governor commended the personnel involved in the operation for their efforts to protect lives and property, while stressing the importance of sustained information sharing and coordinated action among security formations.

Aiyedatiwa urged the security agencies to remain vigilant and sustain their efforts against threats to peace and security across Ondo State.

He also assured the security formations of the state government’s continued cooperation, saying his administration would support measures aimed at keeping the state safe for residents, visitors and businesses.
