Gov Okpebholo declares MTN Champs open, backs grassroots sports

The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development as the MTN CHAMPS Season 3 athletics championship kicks off in Benin City with over 2,000 participants.
Speaking at the event’s opening ceremony on Wednesday, Governor Okpebholo, represented by Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, emphasized that Edo would continue to provide world-class sports infrastructure and foster an environment conducive to talent discovery.
Commending MTN and its partners for their initiative, he assured that Edo remains willing to collaborate and serve as a host for future editions of the championship.
Encouraging young athletes to maximize the opportunity, he stated, “We are committed to nurturing future champions. I urge all participants to give their best and represent their schools and states with pride.”
He described the MTN CHAMPS as a vital platform for identifying and developing young talent in athletics, adding that Edo State would continue to support initiatives that promote sports excellence.
“The championship is not just about competition; it fosters discipline, teamwork, and resilience among youths, equipping them with skills that extend beyond sports,” he noted.
Governor Okpebholo also commended MTN for its dedication to sports development, emphasizing that its investment in athletics aligns with the broader goals of youth empowerment and economic growth.
The MTN CHAMPS, organized in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), will run from March 13 to 16, 2025, featuring young athletes from across the country.
