Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed a police inspector in Oyo State following an attack on a patrol team.
The incident occurred at the Budo Masalasi border post at about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the police team was waylaid by the assailants.
The inspector, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, reportedly died from injuries sustained during the ambush.
Other persons also suffered varying degrees of injury in the attack.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation and directed operatives to go after the suspects.
Ayanlade urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, while calling on them to report any suspicious movements in their communities to the nearest police station.
“Yes, there was an attack on police operatives during which an inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” he said.
He added that residents should report individuals with gunshot wounds, those seeking medical attention under suspicious circumstances, or anyone exhibiting suspicious behaviour to security agencies.
