Muslim-Muslim ticket must be approached with care, balance — Dogara
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has urged caution over the possibility of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2027, saying such a move must consider national unity and inclusiveness.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Sunday, Dogara stressed that governance in Nigeria should reflect religious diversity and accommodate all communities. He argued that discussions around the rotational presidency should also include considerations of religious balance, describing it as a matter of justice.
“Running an inclusive government means bringing everyone together to build a nation that works for all of us. If we are discussing rotational presidency, there is no reason we should not also discuss religious balance,” Dogara said.
He explained that a Muslim candidate could represent the Muslim community while a Christian candidate represents the Christian faith, ensuring fairness and national cohesion. “Justice demands that we balance things. That should be our concern,” he added.
Dogara acknowledged that conversations about the 2027 presidential ticket are already underway. While the final decision rests with the President, he expressed confidence that public opinion could influence the outcome, especially if there is a strong call for balance.
“No sitting president has ever lost their party’s primary. Ultimately, whatever the president decides is his decision. But if there is an overwhelming demand for religious balance, as a democrat, I believe he will listen,” Dogara said.
The former Speaker emphasised that leaders should prioritise fairness over fear, ensuring that no region or faith is divided along religious lines.
