Gunmen kill 7 in attack on Kwara communities

Seven people have been confirmed dead following two separate attacks in Ilesha Baruba and Kemanji communities in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on Sunday, April 21, 2025.
According to a statement by the Kwara State Police Command, six individuals were shot dead around 9:30 p.m. when about ten gunmen opened fire at civilians near the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park. Two others sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment.
The victims were identified as Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three unnamed individuals. Their bodies have been deposited at the Ilesha Baruba morgue for autopsy.
Earlier that day, at about 11:30 a.m., a vigilante team on patrol in Kemanji encountered suspected bandits within the Kainji National Park area. A gun battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of three suspected bandits.
However, a vigilante member, Yusuf Samba, was fatally shot during the clash and later died from his injuries.
The police also arrested an informant linked to the attacks. The suspect reportedly admitted to working with a bandit network and is aiding ongoing investigations.
Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi assured residents that tactical teams and intelligence-led operations have been deployed to secure the affected areas.
The Command urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement, warning that anyone aiding criminals will face the full force of the law.
