Gyokeres penalty keeps Arsenal top as festive Premier League drama unfolds

Arsenal will head into Christmas at the top of the Premier League after grinding out a 1–0 victory over Everton on Saturday, while Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all featured in a gripping round of festive fixtures.

The decisive moment at the Hill Dickinson Stadium came when Viktor Gyokeres converted a first-half penalty following a handball by Jake O’Brien. The decision proved controversial, arriving moments after Arsenal felt a foul on Gyokeres had been ignored, with Everton later also furious over two penalty appeals waved away.

Arsenal were far from fluent but remained defensively solid, hitting the woodwork twice through Leandro Trossard and Martin Zubimendi after the interval to preserve their narrow advantage and a two-point lead at the summit.

Manchester City briefly moved top earlier in the day with a convincing 3–0 win over West Ham. Erling Haaland scored early, provided an assist for Tijjani Reijnders and added another late on to take his tally to 38 goals this season for club and country.

Despite City’s seventh straight win in all competitions, Pep Guardiola warned that improvements are still required if his side are to secure another league title.

Liverpool climbed to fifth after edging nine-man Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 at Anfield. Goals from Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike proved enough despite a late scare when Richarlison pulled one back, while Spurs finished the match with two red cards.

Chelsea remain fourth on goal difference after a spirited comeback earned a draw against Newcastle. Trailing 2–0 at half-time, the Blues fought back through a Reece James free-kick and a Joao Pedro equaliser.

Elsewhere, Wolves’ winless run continued with a 2–0 home defeat to Brentford, Burnley ended a seven-game losing streak with a late draw at Bournemouth, Leeds boosted their survival hopes with a 4–1 win over Crystal Palace, and Sunderland moved up to sixth after a goalless draw at Brighton.
