Liverpool edge nine-man Tottenham 2-1 as Isak scores before injury

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over nine-man Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, but the win came with a worrying injury for striker Alexander Isak.

Isak opened the scoring in the second half after Tottenham’s Xavi Simons was sent off in the 33rd minute for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. The goal marked only Isak’s third in 16 appearances since his £125 million move from Newcastle. However, his joy was short-lived as he limped off following a collision with Micky van de Ven.

Hugo Ekitike extended Liverpool’s lead in the 66th minute with a header, his fifth goal in four games, before Richarlison pulled one back for Tottenham in the 83rd minute.

The visitors survived a late scare when Tottenham defender Romero received a second yellow card in stoppage time, leaving the home side with just nine men.

The win lifts Liverpool to fifth place in the Premier League, extending their unbeaten run to six games across all competitions, while Tottenham remain in 13th following a poor run of form. Liverpool manager Arne Slot will now monitor Isak’s fitness closely, particularly with Mohamed Salah away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

For Tottenham, manager Thomas Frank faces mounting pressure after a run of inconsistent results, echoing the struggles of his predecessor despite winning the Europa League last season.
