President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history whose unwavering commitment to democracy and justice shaped the nation’s trajectory.
In an emotional statement following the passing of the Afenifere leader, Tinubu acknowledged Adebanjo’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape and credited him with playing a crucial role in his rise to leadership.
Tinubu also recognized the support he received from Pa Adebanjo during his election as Governor of Lagos State in 1999, a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political history that coincided with the return of democracy in the Fourth Republic.
He emphasized how instrumental Adebanjo’s backing was in securing his victory and shaping his governance in Lagos.
“His unwavering commitment to truth and justice extended to my journey as a governorship candidate in 1999. Baba Adebanjo’s steadfast support was instrumental in my election as Governor of Lagos State under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy,” Tinubu said.
Pa Adebanjo, a veteran nationalist and ardent follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, passed away peacefully at his Lagos home on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
He was a major political force from the First Republic through the Second Republic and a key figure in the pro-democracy movement that opposed military rule, especially after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
The President described the late statesman as a fearless advocate for justice whose principled voice enriched Nigeria’s political discourse for decades.
“All who knew Baba Adebanjo drew from his boundless wisdom and cherished the democratic ideals he tirelessly campaigned for,” Tinubu said.
Despite their political differences in later years, Tinubu emphasized that his respect and admiration for Adebanjo remained intact, describing him as a father figure.
He extended condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the Afenifere group, governors of the Southwest, and all Nigerians who shared his vision.
“As a nation, we will miss his regular interventions in national affairs. Though we mourn his departure, we are also grateful to God for blessing him with a long, remarkable, purposeful life—96 years of unrelenting advocacy for progress and equity,” Tinubu stated.
He urged Nigerians to take solace in the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to public service, expressing hope that Adebanjo’s ideals would continue to inspire future generations.
“May the soul of this great patriot find eternal rest, and may his vision for a just and equitable Nigeria forever resonate in our country,” Tinubu said.
