‘His wisdom steadied me’ – Tinubu reflects on late Awujale

President Bola Tinubu has described the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as more than a traditional ruler, calling him “a confidante, a guide, and a man of truth” whose wisdom and integrity influenced generations.
In a heartfelt post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, President Tinubu reflected on the personal impact the monarch had on his life and leadership, as he joined thousands in Ijebu-Ode for the eighth-day Fidau prayer in honour of the revered royal.
“Kabiyesi was more than a royal father to me. He was a confidante, a guide, and a man of truth whose wisdom never failed to steady those who sought it,” Tinubu wrote.
The President noted that Oba Adetona’s over 65-year reign was marked by dignity, courage, candour, and a deep devotion to the welfare of his people. He said the monarch’s death created an “enormous void” in Nigeria’s traditional leadership, especially in Yorubaland.
He also revealed that he lost two revered figures within hours last Sunday—former President Muhammadu Buhari and the Awujale—both of whom played significant roles in his personal and political journey.
“I am in Ijebu-Ode today to honour his legacy… Oba Adetona’s demise has left an enormous void… His voice, leadership, and generosity will echo far beyond Ijebuland,” the President stated.
Tinubu prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the late monarch Aljannah Firdaus and extended his condolences to the people of Ijebuland and the entire nation.
Oba Sikiru Adetona passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. He was Nigeria’s longest-serving first-class monarch. His quiet Islamic burial the next day has since stirred debate over the absence of traditional rites for a ruler of his stature.
