Illegal structures, poor waste disposal responsible for Kosofe flood, says LG chairman
Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area in Lagos State, Barr. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe, has attributed the recurring flooding in Oworonsoki, Ifako, Ogudu and Mende to indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal structures obstructing drainage channels and natural waterways.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Comrade Olúwọlé Òbísànyà, Ogunlewe said the persistent flooding is largely man-made and can be significantly reduced if residents adopt proper environmental practices.
He warned that the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels and the obstruction of natural waterways continue to undermine government efforts to maintain a flood-free environment.
The chairman called on community leaders to play a more proactive role in environmental protection, stressing the need for stronger collaboration between residents, local authorities and community-based organisations to enforce sanitation regulations.
To strengthen environmental monitoring and enforcement, Ogunlewe directed the Chairman of the Kosofe Community Development Committee (CDC), Hon. Segun Babatunde, to reinforce Environmental Task Force Committees across all Community Development Associations (CDAs) in the local government area.
He also urged the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to intensify enforcement against indiscriminate refuse dumping in public spaces.
According to the statement, the council remains committed to improving environmental sanitation and reducing flood risks through sustained public awareness, stricter enforcement and greater community participation.
“A safe environment is the collective responsibility of every member of this community,” Ogunlewe said.
