‘I’m a die-hard democrat, says Tinubu, recalls NADECO struggle

President Bola Tinubu has described himself as a “die-hard democrat,” recalling his personal sacrifices during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and reaffirming his commitment to protecting democratic governance and the rule of law.
The President spoke on Wednesday at an inter-faith Ramadan breaking of fast with leaders of political parties, including members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Reflecting on his role during the military era, Tinubu said many democracy advocates paid a heavy price to secure the current democratic system.
“Some of us had been bruised struggling for it. We were detained, we protested, we had street demonstrations, we went into exile and all of that. We formed NADECO. I followed the leadership destiny that God has chosen for me. There’s no doubt about it. I am a die-hard democrat,” he said.
Tinubu stressed that his belief in democracy has remained unwavering over the years, adding that his political philosophy is rooted in national unity and democratic values.
“I followed that belief wholeheartedly, committed to a united Nigeria, and that principle and the philosophy will live and die with me,” the President added.

He further assured political leaders that his administration would continue to protect democratic freedoms and ensure adherence to the rule of law.
“There’s no threat from any democrat under my watch. The rule of law must prevail in any democracy. The majority will have their way, and the minority will have their say. That is the sweetness, the essence of democracy,” he stated.
