Impeachment bid against Fubara weakens as two more lawmakers pull out

The impeachment effort against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has suffered a further blow following the withdrawal of two additional members of the State House of Assembly from the process.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh, who represents Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, announced their decision on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, barely 48 hours after two other legislators stepped away from the impeachment move.
Addressing journalists, the lawmakers called for a peaceful resolution of the political crisis in the state, urging their colleagues to prioritise dialogue over confrontation.
While they noted that the governor and his deputy “may have breached certain constitutional provisions”, they said their decision to withdraw was influenced by interventions from respected leaders and stakeholders who appealed for restraint in the interest of peace and stability in Rivers State.
According to Nwakoh, the appeals from elders and key stakeholders prompted them to reconsider their stance and allow room for dialogue.
With the latest withdrawals, four of the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the notice of alleged gross misconduct have now distanced themselves from the impeachment process, reflecting growing calls within the assembly for reconciliation.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene plenary on January 15, 2026, amid mounting expectations over how its leadership will manage the deepening divisions.
Earlier, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, had also announced their withdrawal from the impeachment process, warning that prolonged political tension could further destabilise governance in the state.
