Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abuja on Saturday for a historic state visit, marking the first visit by an Indian leader to Nigeria since 2007.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Modi was warmly welcomed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, along with other senior government officials.

The visit highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between Nigeria and India. On Sunday, Modi is scheduled to meet President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

Both leaders are expected to exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration in critical sectors such as trade, technology, and energy, according to political experts.

Ahead of the meeting, President Tinubu expressed his anticipation in a post on X, saying:

“I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his first visit to Nigeria, which is also the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to our dear country since 2007.

“Our bilateral discussions will seek to expand the strategic partnership between both countries and enhance cooperation in critical sectors.”

Quoting President Tinubu’s post on X, the Indian Prime Minister wrote:

“Thank you, President Tinubu.

“Landed a short while ago in Nigeria. Grateful for the warm welcome. May this visit deepen the bilateral friendship between our nations.”
