INEC commences second phase of CVR ahead of Ekiti governorship poll

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise across the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State ahead of the 20 June governorship election.
INEC explained that the exercise was resumed after it was temporarily halted on 10 December 2025 to allow for the display of the preliminary voters’ register for claims and objections.
The commission explained that the period was used to enable registered voters to verify their details and apply for corrections where necessary, particularly in cases of spelling errors, wrong dates of birth or other discrepancies.
Speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Bunmi Omoseyindemi, said the claims and objections process had been concluded, paving the way for fresh registrations.
Omoseyindemi noted that the ongoing phase was designed mainly for eligible citizens who missed earlier registration windows, especially youths who recently turned 18, the constitutionally approved voting age.
He called on political parties, civil society groups, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to step up mobilisation efforts to ensure that all qualified residents register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards before the election.
The REC described voter registration as a vital civic duty, warning that multiple registration is illegal and punishable under the law, while assuring that INEC has mechanisms in place to detect offenders and ensure a credible and transparent process.
