INEC engages political parties in crucial talks on 2027 election framework

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has convened a meeting with leaders of political parties at its headquarters in Abuja to present and deliberate on new electoral guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting was attended by party chairmen, secretaries, and other representatives. Among those present are Senator Nenadi Usman of the Labour Party, as well as Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Discussions at the meeting were centred on newly drafted guidelines intended to regulate the conduct of the 2027 elections.
The move follows the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which has made a review of existing electoral procedures necessary.

INEC Chairman stated that the updated guidelines are in line with provisions of the new law, stressing that political parties and stakeholders must adapt to the evolving electoral framework rather than rely on outdated regulations.

As part of its preparations, INEC also outlined plans for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. Online pre-registration is scheduled to commence on August 18, 2025, while physical registration will begin on August 25, 2025, enabling eligible Nigerians to register or update their voter details.

The commission further announced a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise aimed at eliminating duplicate entries and removing deceased persons to improve the integrity of the electoral roll.

Meanwhile, debates over electoral reforms continue, particularly on provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, including the Senate’s stance on real-time electronic transmission of results to INEC’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
