INEC finalizes policy on diaspora voting, commends NDVC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has announced that the commission has finalized its policy on Diaspora Voting, with plans for implementation once the required constitutional amendments are made.

Prof. Yakubu made this announcement during a lecture at Chatham House in London, United Kingdom.

He praised the Nigeria Diaspora Voting Council (NDVC) for its relentless advocacy, noting that despite initial setbacks—such as the revised Diaspora Voting bill being voted down during a joint session after passing the third reading—the council has remained dedicated to advancing the cause.

Prof. Yakubu also reiterated INEC’s commitment to transparency, acknowledging multiple consultations with NDVC leadership and affirming his open-door policy in providing guidance for the advancement of Diaspora Voting.

Undeterred by legislative obstacles, the NDVC has ramped up its efforts, collaborating with key stakeholders and supporters to make Diaspora Voting a reality for Nigerians living abroad.
