INEC remains backbone of Nigeria’s democracy, says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the autonomy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing the electoral body as vital to the survival and credibility of Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the flag-off ceremony for the construction of INEC’s new headquarters, Tinubu said the commission plays a central role in ensuring that Nigerians continue to trust their government and the democratic process.
“INEC has been and remains the backbone of Nigeria’s democratic journey. Its role in conducting free, fair, and credible elections is central to the trust our people place in their government and our democratic process,” the president stated.

He added that the new headquarters demonstrates his administration’s unwavering support for INEC’s autonomy, capacity, and institutional growth. According to him, the facility will serve as a hub for innovation, training, and transparency in election management.
“Our democracy is still evolving, and as it is growing, so too must the institutions that support and protect it,” Tinubu said.
The president also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, describing it as a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
