Information Minister urges media to shun terror publicity

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged the Nigerian media to refrain from giving undue attention to terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements, warning that such coverage could undermine national security efforts.
Speaking at the seventh edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series on Wednesday at the National Press Centre in Abuja, Idris emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping public perception and boosting the morale of security forces.
“The media, as gatekeepers and partners in nation-building, must support our military’s sacrifices by highlighting their successes,” the minister said. “We must deny these groups the publicity they crave. They should be reported as the criminals they are — not glorified or given credence by false narratives.”
Idris noted that terrorist groups often exploit media and social media platforms to spread fear, disinformation, and attract recruits. He urged journalists and editors to embrace responsible, patriotic reporting by avoiding sensational headlines and refusing to amplify terror propaganda.
“These are not freedom fighters; they are murderers, kidnappers, and destroyers, and they must be presented as such,” Idris declared.
Highlighting the security focus of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Idris said the federal government is strengthening military capacity through the acquisition of modern equipment, improved intelligence gathering, and strategic partnerships.
The minister also described the Ministerial Press Briefing Series as a key platform for updating Nigerians on government achievements, ongoing projects, and policy priorities.
“By broadcasting these briefings live on national TV and streaming platforms, we demonstrate our commitment to transparency, accountability, and public engagement,” he added.
The briefing also featured presentations from the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas, who outlined progress in their respective ministries.
