International Rural Women’s Day: Environment ambassador empowers Ondo women with solar lights

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ondo State Goodwill Ambassador for Environment, Ms Olapeju Olayemi, has distributed 36 solar lights to rural women in the Ose and Owo local government areas of Ondo State.
The initiative marked the 2025 United Nations International Rural Women’s Day and was aimed at promoting renewable energy use among rural women.
Olapeju said the programme would empower women and enhance development in local communities through clean energy projects.
She noted that despite their contributions to society, many rural women still lacked access to clean energy and other basic infrastructure.
“I also urge our community women to spread the awareness that solar energy plays a crucial role in limiting climate change as you return to your various communities,” she said.
She commended the youth tech team led by Ologan Charles and others for turning waste into solar energy and also praised women advocates who donated materials and farm tools to rural households.
Owo council chairman, Hon. Tope Omolayo, said the workshop was to celebrate rural women’s strength and importance in food production. A beneficiary, Mrs Alonge Owani, thanked the organisers and donors for the support.
