Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has stated that the decision to prosecute those responsible for the recent tanker explosion in Maniya Village will depend on the findings of an ongoing investigation.
Namadi made the remarks while addressing journalists at the State House after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.
The tragic explosion, which occurred last week, claimed multiple lives and left several others injured, with victims currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Governor Namadi assured that the investigative panel established by the state government would thoroughly review the incident, and only after its report would the government decide whether to press charges against those found culpable.
The explosion has raised concerns about safety regulations and the handling of hazardous materials in the region, prompting the state government to take immediate action to ensure accountability.
Responding to questions about the current situation in the state, Namadi said, “As of today, we have about 181 people who died, around 80 people in the hospital, and about 210 families affected by this.”
On the actions taken by the state government to mitigate the situation, he said, “The state government has already established a high-powered committee under the chairmanship of a retired DIG to investigate the root causes and advise the government on the appropriate course of action.
“Additionally, Mr. President immediately directed the Corps Marshal to investigate the matter and come up with a permanent solution to this problem in the country.”
The governor added, “The government has taken responsibility for the medical bills of all the affected people, and we have provided various interventions for the families to help them sustain their livelihoods. Mr. President has also promised to intervene and assist the victims.”
Namadi emphasized that his visit to the Villa was to express gratitude for the actions taken so far by the President to bring relief to the victims of the fire incident.
