IPI honours varsity don, renowned female journalists 

The International Press Institute (IPI) has celebrated some exceptional women media leaders from across the globe, including Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika of the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Ogwezzy-Ndisika, a distinguished academic in journalism and mass communication, holds the unique distinction of being the first woman and the first alumnus to head the Department of Mass Communication at UNILAG.

A statement issued by the Institute said, “On International Women’s Day, March 8, we are proud to celebrate the remarkable women media leaders within our global network. From our first female member to the courageous journalists, innovators, and media leaders we honour today, these women have played pivotal roles in shaping journalism and advocating for free media worldwide.

“We salute their groundbreaking reporting, unwavering dedication to press freedom, and exceptional leadership in challenging times for independent media. As we celebrate IPI’s 75th anniversary this year, we are proud to count these women—both past and present—as vital members of our global network.”

Other notable women celebrated by IPI during the International Women’s Day, include a founding member of the institute, Oveta Culp Hobby, and journalists from Georgia, Italy, Slovenia, and Egypt, Mzia Amaglobeli, Alessia Cerantola, Anuška Delić, and Solafa Magdy.

Also recognised were the Director of CORRECTIV.Europe in Germany; Joanna Krawczyk, an independent documentary filmmaker and television producer; Priya Thuvassery, and other journalists from Brazil, Juliana Mori, Jordan, Etaf Roudan, Ecuador, Isabela Ponce, Sri Lanka, Raisa Wickrematunge, and Ecuador, Alina Manrique Cedeño.
