Iyabo Obasanjo says compassion for Ogun people informed PDP defection

Former Senator representing Ogun Central, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has said her decision to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was driven by compassion and her desire to better serve the people of Ogun Central.
Obasanjo-Bello stated this while receiving members of the Liberty Group, an arm of the Jelili Kayode Amusan Concerned Volunteers, during a courtesy visit to her residence at the Obasanjo Hilltop in Abeokuta.
She said the PDP’s people-centred philosophy aligns with her passion for humanitarian service and would provide a better platform to extend support to her constituents.
According to the former senator, her endorsement by various support groups, particularly the Liberty Group, reflects her record of service and philanthropic contributions during her tenure as Ogun State commissioner for health and later as senator representing Ogun Central.
“In fact, I like helping people, and PDP as a party has always been a people-centred party, which further helps me to spread my philanthropic gesture to my constituents. And, I promise to integrate all the groups into our platform as well as assure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of my total support in the coming general election,” Obasanjo-Bello said.
She added that the APC no longer aligns with her vision for the people of Ogun Central, a development she said informed her decision to leave the party.
Earlier, the leader of the Liberty Group, Mr. Kazeem Adedoyin, said the group’s members were drawn from Ifo, Ewekoro, Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Odeda and Obafemi-Owode local government areas. He said the endorsement was based on Obasanjo-Bello’s achievements while representing Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011.
Adedoyin pledged the group’s loyalty and support for the former senator, adding that more than 95 per cent of its members possess permanent voter cards and are prepared to vote en masse for Obasanjo-Bello and the PDP’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, in the forthcoming election.
