John Fashanu sues Nigeria Police over alleged unlawful arrest

Former England international and ex-Wimbledon striker John Fashanu has filed a lawsuit against the Nigeria Police, seeking ₦200 million in damages over what he describes as wrongful arrest and violation of his rights.
Fashanu, 62, was arrested alongside his wife, Vivian, and lawyer, Chinyere Chigbu, in connection with a land dispute. He faces charges of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining by false pretence, all of which he denies.
The dispute reportedly began when a group of investors paid over £500,000 for a 22-acre plot of land.
However, Fashanu claims he later discovered construction work on the site, allegedly under police protection. While visiting the area with his lawyer, he was arrested after voluntarily reporting to a police station.
Fashanu alleges that he and his co-accused were subjected to inhumane treatment and held from December 16 to December 19. His wife was also detained when she went to the station to check on him.
Fashanu further claims that his mobile phone was confiscated, which he argues is a violation of his constitutional rights.
The lawsuit names 12 high-ranking police officials, including the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Abuja. The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the case to April 10, allowing the defendants time to respond.
Fashanu remains free on bail and insists that the issue is a civil matter rather than a criminal one.
