Jonathan describes political rise as ‘miracle’ at Reuben Abati’s book presentation

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described his political journey as a “miracle,” reflecting on his rapid rise from deputy governor to Nigeria’s president within four years.
Jonathan made the remark on Friday at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos, during the public presentation of books authored by journalist and former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Reuben Abati.
“My political journey looked like a political miracle. From deputy governor to becoming president of this country within four years — it was a miracle. It’s only God that made it possible,” Jonathan said, commending Abati for his intellectual depth and for documenting his government experiences.
The event, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, also featured reflections on leadership and truth in governance. Obasanjo praised Abati’s evolution from journalist to political aide and now author, describing him as a “son who has matured and progressed.”
“The truth that I stood for at that time, you have now come to stand for. There’s a difference between progress and success. You’ve made progress; now you have to make success, and may God continue to help you,” Obasanjo added.
Journalist Louis Odion reviewed the books — Portraits: People, Politics and Society (642 pages), How Goodluck Jonathan Became President (285 pages), and A Love Letter and Other Stories (402 pages) — noting they capture Nigeria’s defining moments, highlighting both its challenges and potential for unity.
Abati expressed gratitude for the recognition and revealed that more works on the Jonathan presidency would be published in the future. The event also featured a keynote address by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Hassan Kukah.
Several dignitaries attended, including former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba; Abia State Governor Alex Otti; Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat; EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede; the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Abdulkabir; former governors Gbenga Daniel and Adams Oshiomhole; Access Holdings Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede; publisher Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru; advertising mogul Biodun Shobanjo; sports administrator Amaju Pinnick; and Reuben Abati’s wife, Kikelomo, alongside family members.
