The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adenike Oladiji, has expressed worry over students’ poor awareness and low interest in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the 36th convocation, Oladiji said over 3,000 students had benefited from the scheme, but many others were unwilling to apply.
“The level of awareness by the students is quite low. We are trying to get them to be aware of it. And then the disposition also – a lot of people think, why should they go to school on credit?… As we speak, we have over 3,000 students benefiting from the NELFUND scheme,” she said.
The VC explained that the government remained committed to the initiative and urged students to take advantage of the reopened application portal.
She revealed that 2,747 undergraduates would receive degrees, including 240 First Class, 1,479 Second Class (Upper), 912 Second Class (Lower), and 116 Third Class.
According to her, Aduragbemi Akindunbi from the Department of Civil Engineering emerged as the overall best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.98.
Oladiji noted that 867 postgraduate students would also be honoured, adding that FUTA continues to expand its global presence in science, technology, and innovation.
