JUST IN: Court dismisses KWAM1’s bid to halt Awujale selection process
An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu-Ode has dismissed an application by popular musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal 1 (KWAM 1), seeking an interim injunction to stop the nomination process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
The Awujale throne became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona on July 13, 2025, sparking succession moves within the traditional institution. KWAM 1 had indicated interest in the throne but was reportedly rejected by the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, through which he sought to contest.
Subsequently, the musician approached the court, suing the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and five others, asking the court to halt the ongoing selection process pending the determination of his suit.
Ruling on Monday, Justice A. A. Omoniyi of High Court 3, Ijebu-Ode Judicial Division, held that the application for an interim injunction lacked merit and could not be granted.
The judge ruled that the court could not restrain the governor and other defendants, including the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, from continuing with the process of selecting a new Awujale.
However, Justice Omoniyi ordered an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit and adjourned the matter to January 14, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.
