By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin
Firefighters have rescued five people from a three-storey building after eight people were trapped when the structure collapsed in the Popo Giwa area of Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State early Tuesday.
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the rescue operation while speaking to Western Post.
The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Hakeem, said the building was dilapidated and structurally weak before it collapsed.
Hakeem said rescuers had so far brought five people out of the debris, adding that the condition of one of the victims remained unclear because of the severity of the injuries sustained.
He said three other people remained trapped as emergency workers continued efforts to clear the rubble and gain access to them.
According to Hakeem, the affected structure was a complicated three-storey building, with both the lower and upper sections among the portions that collapsed.
He said the rescue operation was still ongoing, with firefighters and other emergency workers removing debris from the collapsed structure to reach the remaining victims.
Emergency responders remained at the scene as efforts continued to rescue those trapped and prevent further casualties from the weakened structure.
