JUST IN: Ondo police nab 11 suspects over abduction of church worshippers

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The Ondo State Police Command on Friday announced the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the abduction of worshippers at a Celestial Church along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Uso.

The development was disclosed during a press conference, where the command said the arrests followed intensified intelligence-led operations launched shortly after the incident.

Western Post had earlier reported that gunmen, at about 12:50 a.m. on February 25, 2026, stormed the church premises and abducted six worshippers to an unknown destination.

Speaking on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, explained that the suspects were apprehended through a joint security operation involving police operatives, the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups.

According to the command, tactical and intelligence teams were immediately deployed after the report was received, leading to the rescue of one victim and the earlier arrest of a suspect, while subsequent operations resulted in additional arrests.

The police added that those in custody are currently undergoing interrogation and have provided useful information expected to aid ongoing efforts to dismantle the criminal network and locate the remaining abducted victims.

The command also urged religious leaders to temporarily moderate late-night worship activities and strengthen safety measures, while advising residents to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police formation.
