Kadpoly probes dress code incident after students barred from lectures

The management of Kaduna Polytechnic has launched an investigation into an incident in which some students of the College of Business and Management Studies (CBMS) were prevented from attending lectures over alleged dress code violations.

The incident, which surfaced in a viral video on Thursday, sparked reactions on social media after members of the institution’s Dress Code Committee were seen stopping the students from entering lecture halls.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Polytechnic’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Protocol, Godwin B. Ayegba, the management said the outfits worn by the affected students appeared “moderate and appropriate” and should not have warranted such action.

The institution clarified that while it maintains a dress code policy to promote decency, professionalism, and a conducive learning environment, enforcement must be done according to approved guidelines and not applied arbitrarily.

Management said it has begun a fact-finding investigation to determine what led to the incident and to identify any lapses in the enforcement of the policy.

It assured that appropriate steps would be taken to address the situation and prevent a recurrence of what it described as possible overzealous enforcement.

The Polytechnic also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that enforcement of regulations does not interfere with students’ right to education.

Students were advised to comply with the institution’s dress code, while those with grievances were urged to use official complaint channels instead of social media.
