Tinubu meets media executives, promises action on tariffs

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to review tariffs affecting newspaper production and broadcasting materials as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s media industry and support its constitutional role.

The President made this commitment on Friday at the State House in Abuja while meeting with leaders of major media organisations, including the Nigeria Press Organisation (NPO), Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), the Nigeria Guild of Editors, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Tinubu praised media professionals for their role in informing the public, promoting accountability, and providing employment for thousands of Nigerians. He noted that responsible leadership requires making difficult decisions when necessary, even when such decisions attract criticism.

Reflecting on the early days of his administration, the President acknowledged the economic challenges he inherited and defended key policy decisions taken to stabilise the country’s finances.

He said: “Leadership must make decisions at the right time. I accepted both the assets and liabilities of my predecessor because I asked for the job. It has not been easy, but we had to take tough decisions to save the nation from economic collapse.”

According to him, Nigeria has begun to recover from serious fiscal pressures, including debt obligations and foreign exchange instability.

On concerns raised by media executives about import tariffs on newsprint and broadcast equipment, Tinubu said his administration would revisit the matter.

“We discussed issues of tariffs. If there are areas requiring action that I may have missed, I will go back and make the necessary corrections,” he assured.
