Kaduna–Kano, Kano–Daura rail projects on course for December 2026 completion, FG says

The federal government says the Kaduna–Kano and Kano–Daura–Katsina sections of the Kano–Maradi Railway Development Project remain on track for commissioning in December 2026, with construction now between 70 and 75 per cent complete.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, disclosed this during an inspection of the project by officials of the Debt Management Office (DMO), led by its Director-General, Patience Oniha.

Adebiyi said construction had progressed steadily since the contract was awarded in 2021, noting that the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano section had reached between 80 and 85 per cent completion and was undergoing finishing works.

He said rail laying had commenced, while most construction materials had already been delivered to project yards in Kazaure and Katsina.

According to him, quality assurance measures, including geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing of construction materials, are being carried out to ensure compliance with international engineering standards.

Adebiyi also disclosed that successful test runs had been conducted on the Kano–Maradi section, adding that more than 500,000 of the estimated 800,000 project components had been produced, while all the required rail tracks had been procured.

“The overall project has attained between 70 and 75 per cent completion since it was awarded in 2021,” he said.

He added that the procurement of rolling stock would be the next major milestone towards achieving the December 2026 commissioning target.
