Kano commissioner asks deputy governor to resign over alleged disloyalty

By Kunle Sanni –
The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has urged Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo to resign if he is unable to align politically with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf following recent developments in the state’s political leadership.
Governor Yusuf recently defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has sparked debate within the state government. Waiya said continued political differences at the highest level of government could undermine trust, unity and effective governance.
Speaking during a live programme on Muhasa Radio, Waiya addressed reports that the deputy governor remains loyal to the Kwankwasiyya political movement led by former Kano governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, despite Yusuf’s defection. He noted that similar disagreements had already led some commissioners to resign.
According to the commissioner, the deputy governor—who also oversees the higher education portfolio—should consider stepping aside if he no longer shares the same political direction as the governor, describing such a move as honourable and necessary for good governance.
Waiya warned that mistrust within the executive council could stall development efforts, stressing that governance requires a shared vision and confidence among leaders. He added that suspicions during council deliberations could create serious challenges for policy implementation.
He also suggested that personal political ambitions, including possible future governorship plans, may be influencing the deputy governor’s stance amid Kano’s competitive political environment. While acknowledging that ambition is legitimate, Waiya said it should not conflict with the collective direction of the government.
The commissioner said that if he were in a similar position, he would resign to pursue his political aspirations openly. However, he maintained that the decision ultimately rests with the deputy governor, adding that Gwarzo may remain in office if he believes he can continue to work effectively with the governor under the current circumstances.
