Katsina Governor pledges support for creative economy initiatives

Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, has expressed his administration’s readiness to support the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy in its efforts to preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and promote the creative industry.

Governor Radda made the commitment during a courtesy visit to the Minister, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja on Tuesday. He commended the Minister’s vision and ongoing initiatives, particularly in the preservation and recovery of cultural artifacts, describing them as impactful and achievable.

Highlighting Katsina’s own efforts, the Governor revealed that the state has embarked on the renovation of key heritage sites. He mentioned the ongoing N100 million rehabilitation of the historic Gobarau Minaret and the award of a N640 million contract to revamp the National Museum in Katsina, which he said is currently in a dilapidated state.

Governor Radda emphasized the need for Nigeria to leverage its vast cultural resources to boost its global image and economic potential. According to him, past administrations failed to capitalize on the economic opportunities embedded in cultural heritage and tourism.

He also spoke on the promise of Nigeria’s creative sector, describing it as a goldmine filled with young, talented individuals. However, he noted that the lack of infrastructure and investment has hindered their ability to maximize their potential and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

In response, Minister Musawa expressed delight at the Governor’s visit, calling it one of the highlights of her ministerial role. She said the Ministry is committed to diversifying the economy through culture, tourism, and the creative economy—sectors she described as underutilized yet full of potential.

“We hope to achieve an economic breakthrough in tourism,” the Minister said. “By building on our heritage, traditions, and creative talents, we can stimulate domestic tourism, create jobs, and drive sustainable economic growth.”

Governor Radda was accompanied by a high-level delegation including the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abdulkadir Nasir; Principal Private Secretary, Hon. Abdullahi A. Turaji; Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua; Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Dr. Faisal Umar Kaita; Technical Assistant, Dr. Babangida Rimi; and Director, Innercore Consultant on Culture, Musa Umar Yar’adua.
