Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, newly appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has vowed to enhance the judiciary’s standing and restore public confidence in the legal system.
Kekere-Ekun was sworn in on Friday at the State House in Abuja, marking her historic rise as the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, following Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who held the position from July 2012 to November 2014.
In her address following the swearing-in ceremony, Kekere-Ekun committed to ensuring that the judiciary regains the trust of the Nigerian people during her tenure.
“My expectation is that we will take the judiciary to greater heights. We will work to improve its reputation and ensure that people have more confidence in the judiciary,” she said.
“I believe that it’s not a one-person job; we all have to be on board. Since we all see the areas that need improvement, I believe there will be cooperation because we all want to see a better judiciary.
“A better judiciary benefits the entire nation. Whatever shortcomings we see today, we are all part of society. If we want to see improvement, let it start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice. Let us also have faith in the system.”
