Kwankwaso denies working for Tinubu, backs Obi for NDC presidential ticket

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed allegations that he is secretly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that his political loyalty remains with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwankwaso spoke during an interview on Global TV on Wednesday night while reacting to claims by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who alleged that the former governor had been indirectly working for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Bature had claimed that Kwankwaso supported Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election and recently sought a direct meeting with the president.

But the former minister of defence rejected the allegations, describing them as false and politically motivated.

“I think only foolish people would believe that. We are not working for anybody. We are only working for NDC,” Kwankwaso said.

He acknowledged his longstanding relationship with Tinubu but maintained that friendship does not translate into political alignment.

“Bola Tinubu has been my senior brother and good friend up till now. But that doesn’t mean we shall pull all our political ideologies together with him. He is doing his own and I am doing my own,” he added.

Kwankwaso also expressed concern over the state of the country, saying the president may not be fully aware of the challenges facing Nigerians because those around him are allegedly shielding him from the reality on the ground.
