Kwankwaso seeks assurances for NNPP followers as condition to join APC

By Kunle Sanni –
Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said he would only consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) if clear assurances are given on the future of the Kano State Government and the welfare of his supporters.
Kwankwaso made his position known on Wednesday during a meeting with party leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, at his Miller Road residence in Kano.
Addressing the gathering, the former governor said he had not ruled out the possibility of aligning with the APC but insisted that any such move must be based on firm guarantees.
He raised concerns about the fate of NNPP lawmakers, party officials and supporters, noting that previous political alliances had ended with his faction being sidelined after contributing to electoral victories.
Kwankwaso recalled that his group had previously played a key role in forming a government but was later marginalised, a development he said led to their eventual exit from the party involved. He questioned whether the situation would be different if another defection were to occur.
He also stated that, as of now, no concrete assurance had been given regarding the retention of the party’s political structure or the continuity of its influence within Kano State.
The meeting, according to reports, was attended by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo; the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Kofar Mata; the NNPP Chairman in the state, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa; and other senior party officials. The attendees publicly reaffirmed their loyalty to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
