Ondo NCoS intercepts drugs hidden in tomatoes at Akure prison

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has foiled an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Olokuta, in Akure.

The interception occurred during a routine screening at the gate lodge of the facility, where officers stopped two visitors for security checks.

During the search, the officers discovered about four grams of suspected Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes brought into the centre.

The substance was reportedly wrapped in waterproof nylon and allegedly meant to be delivered to an inmate in custody.

The suspects were immediately arrested in line with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, on strict security enforcement.

The command said the suspects had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Commending the officers, the Ondo State Controller of Corrections, Charles Oyewole, warned the public that attempts to compromise custodial security would not be tolerated.
