The Kwara State government has intensified efforts to ensure the health and well-being of its residents by shutting down eateries that fail to comply with environmental sanitation standards.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, expressed her disappointment during a recent inspection of eateries in Ilorin. She noted that despite repeated warnings, several establishments have failed to adhere to the necessary environmental laws and hygiene practices.

“We have received numerous complaints from residents about these establishments, and our inspections have confirmed that some of them engage in unacceptable practices, including discharging untreated wastewater into public areas, which poses serious health risks to the community,” Buge said.

She emphasized that the government’s actions are focused on protecting residents from hazardous environmental conditions that threaten their health and safety.

“It has become necessary for the government to shut down eateries that received abatement notices but failed to comply. We will not hesitate to close any facility that violates sanitation laws,” she warned.

Buge further outlined the requirements for reopening, which include proper effluent treatment to prevent foul odors, provision of sanitary bins with tight-fitting covers, submission of medical fitness certificates for food handlers, provision of aprons, repair of defective septic tanks, and general environmental cleaning.

The eateries inspected include The Place, Chicken Republic, Amala Palace, Iya Yusuf Restaurant, T & K Restaurant, Kwara Mall, Alhaja Ayoka Food Canteen, as well as Item 7, The Mai Shayi, and The Chops Central, all located within Ilorin metropolis.
