In preparation for the upcoming local government elections in Kwara State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed over 3,000 personnel across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The announcement was made by the Kwara State Commandant of NSCDC, Dr. Umar Mohammed, in a statement issued in Ilorin on Thursday.
Dr. Mohammed stated that the personnel, drawn from the State Command, Area Commands, and Divisional Offices, will be stationed at various polling units to work in coordination with other security agencies. Their primary mission is to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections, free from violence, intimidation, and any attempts to disrupt the process.
“Our responsibility is to create an environment where the local government elections can take place without interference. We will not tolerate violence, ballot snatching, or any other form of electoral misconduct,” the Commandant declared.
He reiterated that the NSCDC would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to political thuggery and hooliganism, with any disruptive behavior met with swift and decisive action.
To further strengthen security, special forces including Operation Harmony, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and the Female Squad will patrol the state.
The NSCDC’s Anti-Vandal Unit and the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department will also be deployed to protect vital government infrastructure from potential vandalism during the election.
Dr. Mohammed urged political parties and citizens to cooperate fully with security agencies and avoid any actions that could compromise the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The NSCDC’s firm stance is aimed at ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in an atmosphere of calm and security, reinforcing the importance of safe and transparent elections across the state.
