Governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have agreed to adopt a consensus primary for the selection of the party’s candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The aspirants who endorsed the arrangement include Prof. Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan, Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), and Kale Kawu.
The decision followed what the aspirants described as extensive, productive and cordial deliberations held a few days ago at the Abuja residence of the party’s state leader, Bukola Saraki.
According to them, the resolution was reached in the overall interest of the party, stressing that its success in the 2027 elections is more important than individual ambitions.
They noted that the move was also aimed at avoiding unnecessary division, conserving time and resources, strengthening party unity, and entering the campaign season as a cohesive team.
The aspirants further stated that they had agreed to recommend a consensus arrangement for the selection of the party’s governorship candidate, with the process to be moderated by the party in line with democratic principles and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
They jointly affirmed their commitment to abide by the decision of the party leadership and pledged full support for whoever emerges as the party’s governorship flagbearer.
The aspirants added that consultations had commenced with their supporters across the state to communicate the decision and mobilise backing for the eventual candidate, while expressing hope that God would grant the party leadership wisdom and guidance in making the right decisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
