The Assistant Chief Registrar, Vital Registration Department, National Population Commission (NPC) in Kwara State, Mallam Razaq Alege has disclosed that 258,905 births and 4,108 deaths were recorded in the state between 2019 and 2021.
The NPC official made the disclosure while speaking with Westernpost correspondent in Ilorin on Tuesday.
“In 2019, Kwara recorded 94,157 births, in 2020, 80,071 births were recorded and in 2021, 84, 677 births were recorded.
“The state also recorded 1,409, 1,325 and 1,374 deaths in 2019, 2020, and in 2021,” he said.
Alege said the commission arrived at the figure through residents who walked into their offices (registration areas) to apply for the certificates.
He urged parents to ensure that they procure birth certificate for their new born, noting that its importance is enormous.
Figures were also collected from hospitals across the state, he added.
According to him, birth certificate is used for school enrollment, processing international passport, driver’s license among others.
The Assistant Chief Registrar noted that death certificate is no less important because it is used in claiming entitlement by the family of a deceased person.
He added that government uses death certificate for planning because the form filled by relatives of the deceased contains causes of death.
With this, government is able to know that the death is peculiar and knows how to manage the causes, he added.
