Lagos APC defends Tinubu’s 30-day petrol discount, accuses opposition of playing politics

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the opposition for condemning the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount, accusing it of prioritising politics over Nigerians’ welfare.

Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said this in a statement issued on Friday, describing the opposition’s reaction as “political opportunism masquerading as economic criticism.”

The initiative, implemented through Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) retail outlets, offers petrol at cost, with priority given to public transport operators.

Oladejo said the temporary intervention could provide immediate relief amid rising transportation and living costs, insisting that legitimate concerns about its sustainability should not overshadow its potential benefits.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure transparent implementation, verify that Nigerians benefit and explain what measures would follow the 30-day period.

The APC spokesman challenged opposition parties to propose practical alternatives if they considered the initiative inadequate, including how such proposals would be funded.

He acknowledged that the discount alone could not resolve Nigeria’s economic challenges, calling for sustained efforts to stabilise prices, improve domestic refining and reduce logistics costs.

Oladejo urged political actors to prioritise practical solutions over partisan criticism, stressing that Nigerians deserved immediate relief alongside long-term economic reforms.
