Lagos approves 76 private schools, warns against malpractice, safety breaches

The Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has presented approval letters to 76 private schools that met the state government’s guidelines for the establishment and operation of private educational institutions.
The presentation ceremony, marking Batch 1 of the 2026 approval exercise, was held at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu.
Presenting the letters, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, charged the newly approved proprietors to remain law-abiding and strictly comply with all regulations guiding school operations in Lagos State.

He urged them to align with the government’s vision for advancing the education sector and to grant OEQA officials and ministry representatives unhindered access during routine inspections and official engagements.
Alli-Balogun reiterated the government’s zero tolerance for school-related vices, warning against acts that could undermine educational standards. He emphasised compliance with the Lagos State School Safety Initiative and cautioned against examination malpractice, bullying, sexual assault and other infractions, noting that violators would face sanctions.

In her goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, assured the new proprietors of continuous monitoring and institutional support, stressing that the government seeks a collaborative relationship with private school operators. She particularly advised schools with boarding facilities to prioritise students’ safety and adhere strictly to relevant regulations.
Earlier, the Director-General of OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, described the event as a milestone in promoting standards and accountability. He disclosed that the approved schools comprised 34 secondary schools, 41 nursery and primary schools, and one boarding secondary school. He also announced the adoption of a quarterly approval exercise targeting at least 100 schools per quarter to streamline the process and encourage compliance.

Also speaking, the representative of the Registrar, Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr. Peter Adefioye, guided the proprietors on examination procedures and registration requirements. Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Pastor (Mrs.) Atinuke Oyenuga commended the state government’s commitment to improving education and pledged that the newly approved schools would uphold high standards of excellence.
