Lagos begins 18-week maintenance on Mazamaza bridge along Badagry expressway
The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance programme for the Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.
The maintenance comes amid plans to eventually demolish and reconstruct the bridge as part of the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 project, a 14-kilometre extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the repair works would commence on Monday, January 19, 2026.
According to the statement, the maintenance will cover both the Toll and Service lanes in both directions, with particular attention to expansion joints and other critical bridge components.
Osiyemi assured that the bridge will not be completely closed at any point during the exercise, adding that traffic will be managed through carefully planned diversions across the Toll, BRT and Service lanes.
“The Lagos State Government has released a traffic diversion plan for the maintenance works on the expansion joints and bridge elements of Mazamaza Bridge, both Service Lane and Toll Lane along the Lagos–Badagry Carriageway, inbound and outbound, commencing from Monday, January 19, 2026, to Thursday, May 28, 2026 (18 weeks),” the statement read in part.
The maintenance will be executed in phases to minimise traffic disruption. A preliminary phase scheduled for January 24–30 will involve preparation of work zones and assessment of traffic management requirements.
This will be followed by Phases 1 to 4, covering repairs on the inbound Badagry lanes from January 31 to March 30, and Phases 5 to 8, focusing on the inbound Lagos lanes from March 31 to June 2.
Motorists are advised to expect lane restrictions and plan their journeys accordingly, as the phased maintenance programme will run through May 28, 2026, covering the entire bridge in both directions.
