Lagos deploys Intelligent Transport System to curb speeding, traffic violations

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has rolled out four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites aimed at enhancing traffic management and curbing road violations.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, announced the development during a press briefing on Thursday, noting that the newly deployed devices would complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution technologies.
According to Osiyemi, two checkpoint sites have been strategically installed to detect and deter speeding—one at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80 km/h, and another at NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60 km/h.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road accidents. These checkpoint sites are positioned to monitor and enforce compliance with speed limits,” Osiyemi said.
In addition, the government has deployed e-police sites at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to monitor various traffic violations. These sites will detect offenses such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, lane indiscipline, and reversing on highways.
To ensure compliance, Osiyemi disclosed that traffic law enforcement would commence immediately. Violators would receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), detailing their offenses and corresponding fines—N20,000 for running a red light and N50,000 for speeding.
“This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce road accidents.
“The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment,” the commissioner stated.
The Lagos State Government urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules, emphasizing that the ITS initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety and ensure smooth traffic flow across the state.
